True (and partly true) stories of a celebrated

CPR locamotive

Geared for the middle-aged reader (and inquiring adults,) the historic times of Canadian Pacific Railway Locomotive 374 are explored through eight short stories featuring real-life and fictional characters. Lady Agnes Macdonald, wife of Canada’s first Prime Minister, enjoys the scenic splendor from Rockies to coast while precariously seated aboard the engine’s cowcatcher. Orphaned Chinese railway worker Jian longs to reunite with his brother after they part ways in the treacherous Fraser Canyon. Trapped behind the catastrophic Rogers Pass avalanche of 1910, reluctant rail passenger Amy learns about giving and forgiving. Working as a movie extra in Depression-era Revelstoke, Cassie forges a friendship with the mysterious Sam. In post-World War II Vancouver, Jimmy discovers that his sad memories of Engine 374 are about to be reawakened. Susan and her friends want to give playground structure Engine 374 a realistic look for their summer’s eve performance, and wind up catching a crook in the process. Retired roundhouse mechanic Bill reminisces about Engine 374 amidst the celebrations of Vancouver’s 100th birthday at Expo 86. Determined Evie wages a stubborn battle to save her much-loved engine. Will Engine 374 rust into oblivion amidst the skyscrapers of a changing Vancouver landscape?
